Antique Large Cul Noir Round Platter, Basket Design, Rouen Area, France c.1900 hand colored 9 in and 3A large antique cul noir platter in tin glazed faience with manganese blackened underside, decorated with a classic basket motif in the Rouen tradition. Cul noir wares take their name from the dark manganese glaze applied to the reverse a practical and regional characteristic found particularly in Normandy pottery workshops during the nineteenth century. These pieces were made for everyday domestic use yet often display remarkable decorative charm.
