It was designed by the Panhard Company as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry. Its serial production was launched in 1934. It was named Panhard 178. These vehicles had a rear engine and all wheel drive. Their main armament was a 25mm anti tank gun. 551 vehicles were produced up to 1940. As part of the French Army cavalry units, Panhard 178 took part in combat in the spring of 1940.
