Sapphire also has a lot of access to Disney Lorcanas Ward mechanic meaning they cant be chosen as a target for action cards which increases your characters survivability

Both the active and benched Pokmon can be evolved and have energy cards attached to them

You need to basically be mono blue as well as having both alternate mana sources and lots of other cheap permanents to be able to support Thwart without it crippling you

There were far less alternate win conditions at the time and it provided something new to build around
