English Redwork Sampler from 1808 Flower Critter Stitched Area: 6-1/4 inches (15A delicate and beautiful redwork marking sampler from 1808! This is one of the earliest red marking samplers. I know Bristol samplers did not appear until the 1860s. The pattern of Mary Purdye in my store is from 1815. Lydia was a very accomplished stitcher and the back is almost as perfect as the front. There is an upper and lower case alphabet with the "J" omitted. The lower case alphabet uses the old English long "s" in the shape of an "f". There
